Dinner Show Review- Pirates Dinner Adventure in Buena Park

Dinner Show Review- Pirates Dinner Adventure in Buena Park, Califonria.

Another in our series of Dinner Show Reviews. It has been a long while since any of the team indulged in the simple fun of Dinner Shows, so on our recent trip to California we decided it was time once again to check them out.

Pirates Dinner Adventure only has one other location, in Orlando, Florida, where we had seen the show in the past. The Buena Park location is the original and so much is different from the Orlando location, plus it seems to show has received some new upgrades (again, compared to the previous version we saw in Orlando).

Location: Buena Park, California
When: March 13th, 2014
Price: $59.95 for Adults and $36.95 for Children
Special Coupon Deal: See Below!

Haunt Review- The Fear Experience

Haunt: The Fear Experience
Location: Parma, Ohio
When: October 25th, 2013
Times: Closed for 2013
Price: $22-30
Rating: Good
Recommendation: Visit if Nearby
Website: The Fear Experience

!DISCLAIMER!
We were invited by Fear Experience to review their haunted attraction. This has in no way swayed or altered our opinion of this or any haunt we visit.

Honestly, I knew nothing of this attraction as it was one Kitsune had picked for a review. Before our visit I hadn't even heard of them before so I had no idea what to expect.

Although I admit, I'm rather disappointed they aren't running for the final Halloween weekend. It's a pretty good haunt which could easily attract people for Halloween and the final weekend of Oct/Nov. Sadly though they mad the choice to close early, so you'll have to remember this for the next Halloween season.

Fear Experience offers 4 haunted attractions located in Parma, Ohio. Hidden in once abandoned body of a big-box store, we found a fun and rather long haunted attraction. Each of the three haunts has a unique theme, while it's not amazing it's petty good and worth a visit.

!DISCLAIMER!
We where invited to visit Haunted Hills Estate as Media. This has in no way swayed or altered our opinion of this or any haunted attraction.

Haunted Hills Estate is a home-grown haunt that's still in touch with it's family roots. It feels down to earth and alive but it's the amazing actors which really bring this haunt to life. It's been several years since we last visited Haunted Hills Estates and they've improved!

It really was a pleasure to visit this place and while it may be hard to find, it's worth your time to get out there. This is an interactive, story driven haunted attraction which is something often missing these days in the world of commercial haunts.  The actors expect answers when they ask a question, they will be in your face and in full character. It's the actors that make this haunt as great as it is and everyone should experience this kind of attraction, so get yourselves down there!

They offer three separate attractions and you can chose your ticket, visit one or all three, it's your choice. The offerings this season are- Legends, The Dead Chambers and The Challenge Trail. Although for $25 your get all three and they can take some time to get through, so plan to spend some time at this place.

Website Link: Fright Farm

 !DISCLAIMER!
We were invited to visit Rich's Fright Farm as Media. This has not swayed our opinion nor does it alter our views on haunted attractions.

For their 24th year Rich's Fright Farm gives you a good show. Each year their show changes, altering massively and giving you a new show with new scares. It's been several years since we last visited and everything had changed, which was a pleasure to see since always seeing the 'same show' gets boring after a while! Thankfully, this isn't a concern with this haunt but be warned it takes a good bit of time to get through and even more on a busy night!

Overall, we found their haunts a good time and a good value. Since our last visit we found some large improvements to this haunted attraction including a new stage area with live music and an enlarged 'VIP Tent City' area, which you can rent for the night of your visit (it's a little pricy but nice). For the main event they offer three separate haunted houses- The Hayride, The Haunted Mansion and The Maze. Each has it's own unique theme and have clear barriers so you know your entering a new area.

Haunt Review- Howl-O-Scream 13 at Busch Gardens Tampa

Haunt: Howl-O-Scream 13
Where: Busch Gardens Tampa- Tampa, Florida.
When: September 27th, 2013
Price: Ranges from $30 to $80
Dates/Times: Thursday-Saturday (Visit Website for Details)
Rating: Very Good
Recommendation:  Worth the Price, Go if your in Florida.
Website Link:  Howl-O-Scream 13- Evil Comes Out to Play

!Disclaimer!
We where invited to Howl-O-Scream's Media Event, as part of this we where given a few perks in return such as front of the line passes and two free drinks. As such we where able to visit every house and scarezone to give you the best review possible.

Busch Gardens also asks that we remind you, this is not an event for small children.

Upon entering the park you get no break, no time to make your plans because your very first encounter with the "13 Evils" begins the moment your inside.  13 Doorways for 13 Evils, the scarezone is just as you enter the gates and the actors who portray each are absolutely excellent at their parts. They are high energy, in your face and just as fully twisted as their characters.  It's truly an excellent opening and sets the tone for a great event.

At A Glance:
Howl-O-Scream 13 is a great event and the new theme for this year "13 Evils" works excellent for the park. The new theme and the re-design of some of the older houses just works, it's bumped the event up highly in my opinion from the last time we saw it 3 years ago.
However, I have a few minor issue with the event which seems to be a problem with both Howl-O-Scream events in general.  While the houses in Tampa where all well done and excellently themed, the clowns just need to go. Nothing about that haunt is scary and most of it falls into the realm of just plain annoying. If your looking for a house to skip, make it the clowns because it's not worth waiting more then 15 minutes maxium for.
My second issue was the scarezones, which desperately need more actors in them.  Now, I can't tell you if this was "first night" problem or not but these areas are well themed and they should be staffed by far more people. If that happens, I'd rate them as excellent and bump the park's rating up to Excellent. However, as I saw it.. their grossly understaffed.

Below I'm breaking out the event into two categories: The Houses and The Scarezones.
This is to not only keep things straight in my own mind but to allow the reader an easier time.  Each "House" will be giving a rating and description along with letting you know which of the "13 Evils" can be found there. In an effort to keep the scares a secret for your future enjoyment, I will be rather vague but shall attempt to explain as much as possible.

Read on for a FULL breakdown!

Haunt Review- Hundred Acres Manor

Haunt: Hundred Acres Manor
Where: Bethel Park, Pennsylvania
When: September 15th, 2013
Price: $18
Rating: Excellent
Recommendation: Go, Right Now.
Website Link: Hundred Acres Manor

!Disclaimer!
We where invited up to Hundred Acres Manor to review their haunt by their staff.

It had been several years since we last saw Hundred Acres Manor, I believe it was 2010.

Back then, the show was good but what we saw on Sunday night was a shock to the system. Let me tell you, this haunt has considerably upped their game and it's visible from the moment you look at the haunt.

We arrived about 8:30pm on a Sunday night, it wasn't very busy at the time. Later we learned they had massive numbers over the weekend due to being one of the only haunts in the Pittsburgh area that opened early.  From the moment you get close to the door you just know something amazing is going to happen, it tingles down your spine.

Park Review- Kennywood Park

Park Review- Kennywood Park

Day: Saturday
Date: August 17th, 2013
Weather: Warm
Overall Raiting: Okay
Coaster Rating: Excellent
Flat Ride Rating: Okay
Opinion: Visit if nearby
Staff: Carrie, Kitsune and Alex

We arrived at Kennywood around 10am, surprised to see just how busy the park was already even before opening. The front gate area was swarming with groups, most of them appeared to be either bands or dance teams with some folks toting coolers as well. The park didn't open till 10:30am. Two quickly noticeable things is that Guest Services at Kennywood isn't open before the park opens, which I find a little bit odd. The second is the fact they don't want anyone near the turnstiles before the park opens, leading to rather rude "Kennywood Cops" yelling at several dozen guests. You'd think they could just hang ropes or something, rather then resorting to rude voiced yelling.

Park Review: Canada's Wonderland

Park Review of Canada's Wonderland
The surprise we didn't expect!

I can't begin to describe the shock and happy surprise we experienced at Canada's Wonderland. We didn't really know what to expect and went into this review rather blind, only knowing basic facts about the park. What we found really was a wonderland of great rides, good food, friendly and knowledgeable employees and a level of cleanliness that I haven't experienced in many years.

Day: Friday
Date: May 24th, 2013
Weather: Arctic Tundra followed by Decently Nice.
Overall Rating: Excellent
Ride Rating: Excellent
Opinion:  GO! GO! GO!

Let's begin, upon arrival in Canada we found the weather had taken a rather nasty turn on us. The promised 73 degree weather took a nose dive and plummeted to 56 degrees as the high. Now I'm not a huge fan of the cold weather to begin with and when you add in riding high speed coasters in cold weather, I'm the first person to begin whining. However, with the application of caffeine and the promise of fun even my southern fried self bucked up and got down to business.

Around 9:45AM we arrived, shivering but ready. Meeting our guide from public relations, Gary, at the gate we where escorted in and given some fun knowledge about the park. One burning question we had was why Canada's Wonderland had a Mountain rather then the fairly standard Eiffel Tower which most of the previous Paramount Parks boast. Apparently it was a fairly random decision, a choice between several options and they chose a mountain as their focal entrance piece.  I have to admit, it makes for a far more striking effect, between the fountains and the waterfalls on the mountain its-self.  Afterward, I read a few comments in regards to the mountain and some have said it needs "cleaned" but when you really stop and examine the overall effect, I personally like it better this way. It looks real, like something the park just left when they where building up their 330 acres, simply because it was pretty.

We had hoped our first stop of the day would be the newest attraction, Leviathan. A massive B&M coaster that is Millennium Forces very angry younger brother. Sadly due to the weather (tundra-like) this wasn't possible as the Mega-Coasters where not running in the cold. Thankfully, the smaller steel coasters and the woodies were not subject to this issue. So while chatting with Gary (who did his level best to convince me to get on Drop tower, which I declined!) we hopped onto one of the parks original coasters, Dragon Fire.  This ride is an Arrow steel looping coaster, built in 1981 for the parks grand opening.  While surely not the biggest nor fastest coaster it the park, it's hard to not appreciate the fact that unlike some other parks they didn't simply remove it once it became dated, they kept their classic and iconic ride. After all these years it's hard not to love the classics and we found this one to be smooth and very well maintained.  Once again I managed to break my previously established rule of "No Front Seat in Freezing Windchills" and froze my hands off while loving even moment of it!

About this point we parted with Gary to wander about randomly on our own. With a stop for some much needed hot chocolate, we paused and made our game plan. Having found Leviathan still closed due to the cold, we decided a ride on another original coaster was in order. This time, we headed straight for the Wild Beast. This is a classic wooden coaster also built in 1981 for the parks grand opening. Due to the weather the lines were not bad and it seemed to keep the crowds way down during the morning hours. Wild Beast is just that, Wild. Between the cold weather making it run more wicked then normal and my own frozen hands (which I'm completely unable to keep down while riding a coaster) we had a great, if jarring ride.  I have to admit, it's not the smoothest wooden coaster I've ever ridden but it certainly doesn't rank anyplace on the scale of "broke my spine" that some others do!

Now, let me pause to wax eloquent about a weird topic for a moment.
This park is clean. Very clean. Never once did I spot a single overfull trashcan nor trash dis-guarded on the ground. Which brings me to the bathrooms. I have NEVER seen bathrooms as clean as the ones in Canada's Wonderland, not even at the Disney Parks! I didn't think amusement park bathrooms could be this pristine and even more shocking, they had HOT WATER to wash your hands with! I only wish more parks took a care for making their washrooms half as hygienic. Through the entire day and many potty breaks, I never once found a bathroom dirty nor odorous. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about but that is easily one concern I don't have with this park.  I'm sure they can get somewhat messy during the much busier season but it seems to me that Canada's Wonderland really cares about their public appearance and do their best to keep things comfortable for their guests.

We took a few minutes and attempted to figure out where we should head next. We stopped for a few minutes to watch their Vekoma Boomerang coaster, The Bat, which was down at the moment. I fully admit, I'll avoid these style coasters when possible as I've found they really don't age well nor do I enjoy having what is left of the stuffing shaken from my head. So I can't tell you if this one aged as ungracefully as the others I've experienced. By this point, having barely had much of a breakfast, I was hungry. Unsure of where exactly we wanted to eat, we check out several options. Since it was still overcast and rather cold, I wanted something indoors for lunch. Considering I'm not the biggest eater on the best of days we opted to skip the all-you-can-eat buffet and headed across the park towards a promising looking restaurant, Backlot Cafe.

Now, about the food. In Canada in general I found the prices of food to be higher then those in the States. While this was a little off-putting, I found their portions to be larger and made with a higher quality ingredients.  Canada's Wonderland is no exception to this either. Like all parks, the food prices are higher then what you'd normally find outside the gates but I didn't find them overly high. Now normally my husband and I tend to share our meals at parks simply because I hate to waste food and we found that a single plate is often enough to share for lunch. We paid $11 for 4 large chicken fingers and more fries then we could eat and around $3 for a soda which was refillable while in the restaurant. This was MORE than enough between the two of us, the portions where large and well worth the price. As we munched away we proceeded to check out what other people had ordered, we found that while the price may be a little higher then expected, the portions are massive. The Burrito was thicker then my fist and easily 8" long and the burgers seemed to be in the 1/2 pound range. The food was good, served hot and very fresh. They had other offerings such as gourmet flavors of Mac'N'Cheese as well as artisan favored pizzas. The selection was surprisingly wide and all the choices looked very appetizing, which isn't at all what I expected from quick service!

After a surprisingly good lunch we headed outside, happy to see the cloud cover was finally burning off and the sun was making an effort to put in an appearance. This caused the temperatures to rise slightly, enough that we spotted one of the big coasters, Behemoth, doing test runs. Watching for a few moments, we made our way over and inquired as to when the ride would open. The employee was friendly and said she wasn't entirely sure, if the testing went well they'd open as soon as possible. So we opted to hang around for about 10 minutes and were very glad we did, within that time the line opened up and we rushed in to get one of the first rides of the day.  Behemoth is a B&M Mega Coaster and was built in 2008. It's got the "V" spaced seats (such as what you have on Diamondback at Kings Island). The ride was smooth because you expect nothing less from a B&M and it had enough air-time to make even the hardcore rider have fun even while freezing your hands off.

Looking back at the suddenly massive line Behemoth had gained while we where riding, we looked around and decided we'd hit one of the clone coasters all the Paramount parks boasted.  The Backlot Stunt Coaster, now normally I don't bother to report on these but I found this one surprising. It was the standard 3 launch sequences but this one just didn't seem to be as rough as the others I've ridden in the past.  The padding was still soft enough not to crack your shins and the brake run didn't try to snap your neck, I was pleasantly surprised as this is also normally a ride I'd skip over.

Up next was Time Warp. Now this thing was simply nutty, I've never seen one built like this in my experience so it was something new! This used to be the Tomb Raider attraction, which I'd heard about but never expected it to look like this. To say it was a surprise would really be an understatement, this thing was fascinating!  It's a single car, four across flying zamperla. You step up onto the train and the back closes over you, then your lifted into the "flying" position for your crazy fast spiral ride up the lift hill. Not many of these got built and this is the first one I've ever had the chance to ride myself.  Now I can't say it was the most comfortable ride and those heartline rolls make you think your going to fall out but it's surely one unique ride that gets your adrenaline flowing well.

Oh Flight Deck. Your Next. Why did I ride you? I know better but you were there, you had no line and I knew before I even stepped a toe in your line you'd hurt. Yet I rode it anyway. I know, it's just a Vekoma inverted and they get mean over time but we figured "why not?!".  Then we remembered, these things are rough and they will beat you up if your not experienced with riding them. Heck, they beat you up even if you know exactly how to ride them. Of all the older rides at Canada's Wonderland, I have to say Flight Deck is one I wouldn't mind waving goodbye to simply for the pain factor. You can't really blame the park for this one, I've never met an inverted Vekoma that's been nice after more than 5 years. However, even I can admit it's nice they've kept it up as best as possible after all these years. Like many of it's cousins, it was once upon a time "Top Gun" and I admit, they have kept their theming up very well over the years.

After surviving the anger of a Vekoma, I decided I was going to reward myself with funnel cake. It's funnel cake and one of those delicious treats I'm utterly unable to walk past without either buying one or drooling.  Now, apparently in Canada funnel cakes are served with both a fruit topping and ice cream. This was new! Here in the states you can normally find fruit topping with your powdered sugar overload but the ice cream was a new factor.  HOLY FUNNEL CAKE! This was no exception the "slightly higher price, more food" rule I learned.  For the massive funnel cake, the ice cream and a drink it was around $14.  It was delicious and it made the perfect reward!

Now sated on sugary fried-dough goodness, we headed straight for another coaster. Up next on our cycle was "Mighty Canadian Minebuster". A classic wooden coaster which was also built with the park in 1981. It's no secret I absolutely LOVE wooden coasters and this one was no exception to my lumber adoration.  It's fast, it's rickety, it screams when angry and even goes under water slides! A good old Philadelphia Toboggan Company coaster, it doesn't disappoint. The trains are so very well padded in all the right spots, more so then others I've ridden, that even a lunatic like me can ride with her arms in the arm and not wonder what will be bruised later. I wish more parks would keep their padding in such top shape and treat their woodies with such love and care!

Next up we headed deep into the trenches of Kid Zone and Planet Snoopy, because I heard one rumor of a baby wooden coaster that I was simply told "shut up and ride it, don't ask questions". Now considering this advice is normally only told to me when it's something I'm just not going to believe, we headed in. On the way we were rather surprised to find a baby suspended Vekoma lurking inside. This couldn't be right, subjecting kids to a Vekoma? They had to be crazy which meant we just had to ride it and find out how this thing could exist here!  This would be "Silver Streak" a family suspended coaster, it didn't have the normal "lowering platform" for it's load/unload. Nor did it feature the tight fitting restraints which your normally bash your ears against, finding this odd we decided it had to be investigated.  WOW! Why can't all the Vekoma's be this smooth and comfortable a ride? Yes, I know it's a "family" coaster but I've never met a single Vekoma over 5 years old that wasn't out to hurt you. This one didn't so I guess I can no longer say "All Vekomas are evil in their old age" as Silver Streak has existed since 2001 and is still smooth and gentle with the kiddies (and weary adults).

Still deep into the children's area we come across Planet Snoopy and it's highly upbeat music. We push deeper into uncharted 'married couple without kids' territory in search of this mysterious "Baby Woodie" I was told to ride.  Twisting our way through the brightly colored area we finally stumble across it, Ghoster Coaster. It may not be huge, it may not tower over you but it packs a surprising punch. Another original ride, Ghoster Coaster was built in 1981 and is a Philadelphia Toboggan Company ride. The themeing in this little area is both well done and adorable, done up like a haunted house and graveyard for the queue line. The seats are small to the point my husband and I decided both our butts would not be fitting comfortably into a single seat, so we each picked a row.  Both of us were happily surprised by the speed and airtime this little thing packs into a small area. 41 feet high and a speed of only 35MPH, you spend more time out of your seat then you do in it. Another surprising coaster under the label of "kids". So before you look down your coaster enthusiast nose at it, just shut up and RIDE it!

Now, being the ham-ball that I really am, as we where heading out of Planet Snoopy we stumbled upon both Snoopy and Woodstock. Never one to pass up getting my picture taken with characters, we stopped since it wasn't busy and got our photo taken also! Naturally with the help of yet another very friendly park employee.

That's another thing I'd like to talk about for a moment. Everyone, as in every single employee I spoke to and saw at Canada's Wonderland, was friendly. Not a single one of them looked hassled or like they where having a bad day, concentrating perhaps but not unapproachable. I found each that I spoke to knowledgeable about their park when asked about the closest washrooms, where smoking areas where located and quickest way to other rides. I can easily tell you, this is the happiest and friendliest park I've ever had the pleasure to experience. I don't know if it was just a good day for everyone (and I've worked enough parks in my life to know sometimes you just have to smile through the crap) but I suspect they take great pride in having both friendly and knowledgeable folks working for them. The only minor complaint I found with any of the employees is that some of them have a tendency to staple you into your ride harness. While this is annoying and sometimes a rather uncomfortable way to begin you ride, it wasn't everyone. Just a few minor incidents which can easily be overlooked. Just employ the old tricks of pushing your shoulders or belly forward if you suspect it may happen.

Alright, moving out of kids area I spot one of my all time favorite style of coasters. A swinging suspended coaster! I LOVE these things with a passion, they are some of the most unique and fun coasters out there. Vortex was no exception and I found it to be faster than even I expected, giving the swinging trains even more power. Built by Arrow and added to the park in 1991. I'm always so happy when I see these types of coasters still running strong as not many are left. Vortex has to be one of the best of those left, simply for the speed and power this ride provides. The lift hill is disguised with the very mountain that is the focal point of the park. Dropping down it weaves through the trees and over the water of a large pond, tossing you around as gravity dictates. Smooth and wicked at the same time, I hope they never make the choice to remove this gem!

Since we are in the area, we head over to the second ride which utilizes the mountain. This would be the surprisingly fast Thunder Run. Thunder Run is a Mack Mine Train and is the 5th and final original coaster which opened in 1981. However, Thunder Run didn't open until May of 1981 rather then with the opening of the park. It was moved from it's original location in 1986 and was placed in the mountain, taking over a walk-thru attraction.  You'll find this mine train a tight squeeze but it's oddly quick and is happily well themed, both inside and outside. Now, I can't find any information online but I suspect the themeing that is located inside the mountain as part of Thunder Run is probably from the Walk-thru attraction who's place it took. You'll find lights, a large beasty and other "mine" type themes as you blast around. This ride also has a second surprise, it does a station fly-by and you can feel it coming! Not the longest nor most thrilling ride but we found it fun and pleasant.

By this point in the late afternoon, we looked over and spotted Leviathan running. It had been running for some time but we had been busy riding our way back in that general direction. Having finished everything else on our list, it was time. We'd been saving the biggest and the best for last.  It was no shock to find this truly monstrous ride had a decent line but we surely where not stepping foot outside this park until we rode it. Leviathan is a B&M Mega Coaster and their answer to Millennium Force. It's exactly 4 feet shorter and 1MPH slower then it's older brother at Cedar Point but it's also newer and smoother in my opinion.  If Behemoth is built for air-time then Leviathan is built for pure speed and it delivers without fail. The last turn is at such an angle that you feel nearly upside down, which is unheard of on rides of this speed but B&M made it happen. I'm a devoted lover of Millennium Force but I have to say this, I'd take Leviathan over it simply for that last banked turn! This is the party piece of the park, you have to ride it. You'll love it, we surely did!

At this point it was getting late and we'd had a rather long drive up the night before, having accomplished everything we wanted and more we decided it was time for some well deserved shopping! Where I found the food prices higher then expected (but worth it) at Canada's Wonderland I found the souvenir prices lower then expected.  The only thing we found to be higher then normal where the on-ride photos, which seemed to run around $18 each for a single photo. Otherwise the T-shirt prices were lower than what the Cedar Fair sister parks charge. The same can be said for other goodies like shot glasses, bags and other items. We picked up several good deals and then kept hunting around. Another surprise was when we found several discount racks which had previous overstock designs, these ranged in price from $20-$5. Naturally we picked up a few of these also since they where such good deals. Finally, exhausted and delightfully pleased with every element of our day (minus the cold start) we headed back to our hotel.

I do not say the following lightly and I had to take great care to word this properly because I've never once written a review where I simply had nothing go wrong.

Overall I found Canada's Wonderland a lot more then I ever dreamed I'd experience when we planned this trip. They surprised and delighted me at every turn from the world class rides and to the simple cleanliness of the park. This is one Cedar Fair park that cares and it shows in every aspect of what they do. Lately I've been very disappointed with Cedar Fair's performance in general but if a park like Canada's Wonderland can exist within their brand, then I have hope for all their parks once again. Canada's Wonderland has given me an even higher standard to hold other parks to, they surpassed my expectations and left them lying broken in the dust.  Now finding my expectations in need of heavy re-evaluation because if this park can do it all right then there is simply no reason others can't give just as good a show.

I've been telling everyone since the moment I got back in the states that they MUST plan a trip to Canada's Wonderland. This park is something to behold and it's not be missed, you need to see things done right and experience something that was nearly magical in the process. Don't think twice, get your passport out and make the trip. It's worth every nickle you'll spend to have that kind of experience!

I've also posted up a complete photo gallery from the best pictures we got at Canada's Wonderland so you can see some more of the park for yourselves.

Halloween Haunt Review: The Dent School House

Picture from Dent School House

Event: The Dent School House
Location: Cincinnati, Ohio
When: October 25th, 2012
Price: $20-30
Rating: Stop what your doing and GO. Now. Move it!
Recommendation:  Don't ask questions, Just Drive!

!Disclaimer!
After contacting Dent School House to say we planned to be in the area would would love to check them out, we where invited to view their haunt and where surprised with media tickets. Afterward we got to chat with the owner and some of their cast. Also keep in mind we went late on Thursday evening.

What can I say about Dent School House in a single phrase?
 ...
 ...
 ...
Holy Tap-Dancing Christ on a Crutch!

I was floored, I mean completely floored with what I encountered with Dent School House. Walking in with no idea of what to expect and very little idea of what this house does, I probably walked away more giddy then a schoolgirl hopped up on pixie stix.  The creative and perfectly themed show this haunt offers is on a new level of twisted shit.. and I LOVED it.

Not only is this an amazing haunted house, it's got a twisted history that's truly something to read. To give you a quick summery the Janitor "Charlie" murdered students and kept their corpses in the basement, later found by angry locals... but the Janitor was never found. Many believe this to be a true haunted location with the spirits of these students and perhaps the Janitor himself roaming the hallways.

Taking this kind of twisted history and turning it into a haunted house, following the same theme of a murderous janitor and his minions was pure genius on the part of the owners.  In keeping this theme you'll find a macabre cast of tormented children, dead teachers and evil spirits waiting to happily scare the control out of your bladder control.
Being the twisted person I really am,  I didn't find myself scared but I was so busy looking around I easily could spend hours and multiple tours threw this haunt.. and still not spot everything amazing! Nothing here is safe or sacred, everything and everyone who walks threw the doors is fair game. You'll be looking one direction and have scares coming from right and left at you, they really are masters of miss direction.

There is truly so much I'd love to tell you about this haunt but saying too much would give away some key information on scares. With that said I'm afraid that  I'm going to have to be very, very vague. I suggest if you want to see it just get in the car and go!

Opening we start with a small group threw a playground of twisted children and one very over-zealous preacher man attempting to tell us to just stay out. Naturally we don't listen and enter, finding ourselves in engulfed in something out of your worst (or best) High School Nightmares.  Student being tormented and tortured by your friendly staff with teachers in prim clothing hanging from the stairway. A Biology classroom gone wrong, Insane Gym Coaches, Truly evil Cafeteria Ladies and so much more lurks within these hallways.. I also suggest you make sure you look UP!

After twisted and turning threw this various corridors, threw an auditorium and even a school carnival you descend into the true darkness of this school. The underbelly of the beast and you know it from the narrow stairway.  Nothing good can come from this area, Nothing. Your in the bowels of the school, the lair of the Janitor. Dust and Depression cover the area with dozens of scares lurking around every corner. You'll wonder threw storage areas, old school house items piled in what appears to be a haphazard fashion all designed to give you that closed in feeling. By this point, escape if futile because your already screwed folks.  The Auto Shop was also down here, this was easily one of my favorite rooms in this entire haunt. I suggest you watch out, the oddest things may try to run you over down there! You just know the Janitor is lurking close, you can feel this haunt drawing towards it's true crescendo of hell. It gives me a happy feeling just remembering it!

In the manner of keeping you scared out of your wits, I'll say nothing more. Just go experience this haunt, I can't say that enough times!

Image from Dent School House
New for 2012, Dent School House is offering a new maze-style haunt with a crazy twist. Unlike many mazes I've seen over the years which tend to be tightly enclosed and blacked out, this maze haunt gives you clear line of site with lovely detention cell bars! To make this higher on the scar-eepy scale it's being run by a twisted clown called "Boss Honk!" and his minions. They are up close, in your face and dogging your footsteps the entire way threw. You will get lost, turned around and very confused. Between the clowns, Fog machines operating at overtime and blinking lights followed by a truly skull-splitting happy song... your in for it.

In the end I can find very few things to possibly nit-pick about Dent School House, In fact I had to dig pretty damn hard to even find one thing that someone outside the Haunt Industry would notice. As a guest I doubt you'd even notice these things but we did. They have a heavy use of Animatronics in this haunt, while those are great (and they really are) they should really be paired with live actors to give you the one-two punch straight into your fear-glands. Another things we noticed where a few rooms without actors, I can't say if this is on purpose or not but I'd like to see actors in every room giving folks a non-stop terror ride threw hell. Other then these two admittedly very minor things, this haunt was by far one of the best I've seen in many years.

So if you've been putting off going to Dent School House I sincerely suggest you drop what your doing, change your plans and threaten your friends with sporks to get there! You now have 3 days left including Halloween Night plus the first weekend in November.
So shut up, get in the car and make tracks!

Halloween Haunt Review: The Scarehouse

Haunt: The Scarehouse
Location: Etna, Pennsylvania
When: October 24th, 2012
Price: Between $15-$35
Rating: So close to Great, You can taste it.
Recommendation: If your anyplace in a 3 hour drive, shut up and go already.

Such an unassuming entrance!

:DISCLAIMER:
- I've worked for Scarehouse in the past and also know the owners. So I do have a slight bias towards them. However don't think that got them the rating I've given, being bias only makes me even more critical about a haunt.
-My husband and I where invited down my Scott Simmons, The creative director and co-owner of Scarehouse in order to review this haunt. We also spent some time with him getting some backround on the new designs within the haunt.  In the matter of full disclosure, we could probably bullshit with both Scott and Barb for hours about haunts and theme parks.. but that is neither here nor there.
-It was Wednesday Night and Early. So admittedly it wasn't the full cast nor had actors hit their proper stride yet.
-We are damn near impossible to scare but we love to watch folks try!

What to say about Scarehouse, one of my old haunts? In a word or two..

FUCKING WOW

Scarehouse has really stepped up their creative game with the new layout's and haunts they've got offered for public consumption this year. Needless to say we where pleased and greatly surprised at the many changes that have taken over since we last attended and worked for this haunt. It's a completely new ballgame leaving me with hardly anything worth nitpicking.. and we all know I enjoy nitpicking the details.

Taken from Scarehouse.Com

Forsaken: This area was once the old "Hall of Nightmares" but with a completely new redesign. Upon entering we found ourselves in the midst of a Carnival/Freak Show gone to pot. Oh great, another circus/carnival haunt right? Let me guess, Clowns Right?
Because that's exactly what went threw my mind, the typical "Oh here we go again" but I was happily surprised to find myself engulfed in a carnival atmosphere that's going to the shady side of dark. Instead of the typical garish bright colors and over caffeinated actors, we found a faded darkness with a hint of creepy. Actors with enough flare to be active and attention grabbing but just enough spooky to give you the impression: Well this isn't going to end well.

From the Carnival we transitioned into a more classical type of haunt, flowing threw a graveyard with enough narrow space to confine you for great scares. The perception and overall feel in here was well done, giving you that proper "Spooky Cemetery at Midnight" setting. I found the crypt/chapel room to be greatly improved with twisting turns and set up for easy scares. Flowing easily into the staple "Creepy Manor House" we found a more traditional setting. Bedrooms, Kitchens and Closets.. Oh My!  This place had everything from Living Dolls, Angy cooks and right into Creepy Kids.
Following around we spotted some falling heads from the ceiling and a rather giant rat.. which seemed to give our group a nice scare, remember to always look up and down! Going around we found the Hillbillies with a side dish of Slaughter house tossed in for fun. Admittedly this has always been one of my favorite parts of this show and with the new Slaughter House action going on we found this scene to be a great improvement. The giant attack hog was good followed by the actor yelling "Down Piggy" which follows the mantra "If you can't make them scream, make them laugh" perfectly.

Many of the actors within Forskaen seem to relay on startle scares, sitting very still then jumping up to give you a fast fright. While I freely admit these aren't my favorite type of scares, these folks have them down. The only flaw I could spot is they seemed to re-set themselves a bit to quickly, only focusing on the middle of the group rather then working the group as a whole in order to act upon the next group in line.

Creepo's Christmas in 3D: Oh Creepo, Your character always makes me smile in that lovely twisted way. This haunt was a new take on your standard 3D house and the Christmas theme? Enough to make even my hardened self cringe slightly. Angry Elves, The Naughty List, Pissed-off Snowmen.. plus the on-going constant theme of frowny faced gingerbread men everyplace was a great surprise. The scent of cinnamon in the air and body parts on Christmas trees, the holidays have gone way off here. The 3D effects aren't overpowering nor lacking, just enough to give you the right feeling without making your eyes cross from vision overload. The actors had the demeanor of hassled retail workers on Christmas eve and happily shared that "get the hell out or be murdered with a garland" attitude in spades, this gave the whole house a truly great vibe. The Make-up the actors where sporting here really stood out with the effects while still sticking with the themeing. Slightly skeleton eerie with a dash of cheerful, it was Cheereerie!
Sadly Creepo wasn't present this night, which I can only imagine would be the perfect topping on this tormented holiday fruitcake.. and probably bloodier also. However this character is so detailed to the person who plays them it's nice to see they didn't even try to put in a half-assed replacement that would ruin the show.
Overall I have to say this was the single biggest surprise to me. Normally I'm bored by 3D houses and don't even bother to give them a faction of my attention, seen one you've seen them all. Well let me just say, this one with the unique theme and wacked-out setting made even skeptical me enjoy a true 3D haunt for the first time in many years.

Pittsburgh Zombies: Oh Pittsburgh, If there is one thing you do well it's Zombies. Who doesn't love a good Zombie haunt? Drawing off the rich zombie history Pittsburgh has been given by Romaro, this house is a great addition.  However, I have to say I was kind of hoping for some fast/smart zombies but true to the area we got the slow/dumb types. Frankly, I'd have peppered it with both myself to even up the odds of more Yinzers wetting their pants. You flow threw a haunt that could only be Pittsburgh with landmark locations unique to the area such as Primanti Brothers featuring a new special of human body sandwiches! The details of this haunt really surpassed my expectations and threw me straight into rarely seen "Carrie is Pleased" area. This haunt was filled with UPEC signs spotting handy phrases (remember zombies don't like sammiches), Maps of Pittsburgh showing "Your are here" and "Safe Zones", A Steelers Gift shop.. no real detail of the area was left out going so far as to sport TV's stating there has been a "Yinzer Zombie Virus Outbreak"!
The perspective here is simply amazing, giving you both a true 'outside' feeling as well as being in a much larger area then you really are. I've got to say, the Scarehouse team outdid themselves on the little details here that perhaps most people would never spot. Much more like a movie-set then a haunt, it really gives you the one-two punch in the guts.
As I said before the zombies here really where well done, with nice details such as make-up and acting. However they where slow and lumbering, a few faster/smarter zombies would have been one of the two addition's this house really needed. Some really nice touches where added such as zombie actors behind chain fences lurching out for some fresh brains, traveling though a 'safe house' who's owner was on the hunt for a can-opener (I hope she found one!), out threw an industrial yard setting complete with 'zombie snacks in a cage' for later enjoyment.  I found the ending a little dry and a bit lacking however knowing Scarehouse has stairs to contend with at the exit it's understandable. In the past the last punch was high powered which often sent folks tumbling down and out into the street, so I can't blame them for not wanting the mass public running like scared bunnies only to fall down a set of stairs.
With that said, the second addition I would make is the ending.. even with the stairs it seems they could have put their big "ending scare" more towards the middle of this haunt which may give folks a nice "Holy Crap, We Escaped" feeling and a little jogging workout at the same time.  So other then these two minor details to nitpick I found this house overall very pleasing to the eye and senses.

In the end I found that Scarehouse goes by the philosophy of "Slow, Steady and Inescapable" rather then the other side of the coin which is "High-Intensity, In-Your-Face, Run like Bunnies". Neither side is wrong and it just depends a lot on what your opinion of a haunt is. Personally I subscribe to the "High Intensity" school of thought but enjoy both sides of this coin.  One thing I really enjoy is they depend a lot on their team of actors for scares and don't over indulge on technology like Animatronics to get the job done. They have several but their unassuming and work more as a distraction for the real scare coming from left field.
Scarehouse does what they do well and the odd, unsettled feeling you have upon entering will follow you the entire way. You'll find your time and money well spent on this locally owned and operated haun, it's worth the trip.

Halloween Haunt Review: Halloween Haunt at Kings Dominion

Image from KingsDominion.com

 WARNING: PICTURE INTENSIVE

Haunt: Kings Dominion
Location: Doswell, VA
Event: Halloween Haunt
When: September 28, 2012
Rating: Good
Recommendation: Good (If Nearby)

Additional Reviews:  Kitsuneverse

Having never been to Kings Dominion, this was something of a new experience for me. A park I'd never been to and haunted houses at the same time. I'm fairly familiar with the various "Kings" parks but never had a chance to visit before, so I had a clean slate of no previous expectations to work with.  I have to admit, I was rather pleasantly surprised by what I found!
Unlike some other Theme Park Haunts we've been to this year, we had a very limited time at Kings Dominion (only five hours) and a bucket list of things we wanted to accomplish including the haunts.  We didn't accomplish everything but managed to see most of the haunts offered up with the help of a maps and some canned libations.

Maps are Helpful!

Unlike some of the other theme park haunts out there, Kings Island is a little crazy. Rather then a few big haunts, they have both big and small totaling the shocking number of 10 total haunts. Their prices are also easily affordable, ranging between $32 (on Fridays) and $40 (on Saturday). We managed to go on opening night, which resulted in a single ticket costing only $20 (college ID). This same night also happened to be "Dress like a Zombie" night which made the who environment of the park even more enjoyable.  It's very rare you find any haunt that will have a theme night and allow folks also in costume to attend!
Thankfully, this Friday wasn't super busy so we managed to do some decent damage. Making it to 7 of the 10 haunts and 4 of their themed scarezones.

Let's begin with the overall themeing which I admit was well thought out and well placed.  The various areas had set themes which worked well and tended to match the attractions in the area, this was a pleasant surprise since it's not nearly as common as one might think! The actors costumes also correlated nicely with the various areas threw out the park. Lot's of attention was placed in the opening courtyard which was nicely themed out with a "Masquerade" feeling which extended threw to the actors and the staple of any one time Paramount Park, the Eiffel Tower which spotted a menacing pair of eyes.

Spooky Skull and Glare-y Eyes!

On to better and scarier things! We quickly acquired an adult type libation and plopped down to make our game plan. What was the plan? Haunted Houses and Roller Coasters naturally, We're simple folk here.  After our quick break and planning session, we used our plot to head to the closest house and work our way around the park in a quick manner and peppering the haunts in with various rides. This sent us in the general direction of our first haunt, Medieval  Macabre.

The name explains a lot really. A Medieval Dungeon inspired haunt. The line was busy but quick moving, allowing you enough time to enjoy the scenery but fast enough that you didn't get bored.  The set was decent but not anything to really write home about spotting your typical haunt fare: Ghosts, Ghouls, Vampires and Dead type folks. One thing we did notice is that this house seemed rather short and rushed. Overall a decent haunt but lacking real inspiration.

Next we wondered threw the "Cleaver Brothers Carnival" which was nicely done to your now generic Carnival/Circus theme. The actors where good and seemed to be having an excellent time using quick startle scares on unsuspecting patrons, electing quite a few screams (to which we giggled).

We landed at "The Slaughter House" up as our next haunt.  This looked promising and we quickly jumped into another good paced line that was moving quickly. This haunt was nice and juicy, full of the lovely gory stuff we so love around here.  Themed like a true slaughter house it had your typical (if generic) props: Bloody Tables, Meat Slabs and Crazed Butchers. The actors here really where having fun, we think they where in the Halloween candy a little bit early because these folks where bouncing off the walls with energy giving the place a good feel. Again though we found this house to be short and slightly rushed but overall the actors made the house work well.

At this point we're enjoying ourselves but haven't seen anything really wonderful to write home about, hoping things would improve haunt wise we took a minor coaster break and enjoyed another fast moving line on Rebel Yell then indulged in a Pepsi followed by a map checking break.

Moving On...

Up next we had "Toxic Plague" as our next house.
At this point the weather decided to be rather annoying and try to dump some unwelcome rain upon us. Being as it wasn't to heavy and we didn't much care, we kept waiting. The line for this one was decently themed, sporting a large 'chemical' truck spill and your ever lovely toxic waste barrels out front. Some randomly flashing lights and fog really gave us some higher hopes for the speed and themeing inside of this haunt. Inside we found some crazy mutated folks, a few monsters and more run-of-the-mill sets leaving us rather disappointed that more wasn't done.  Now don't get me wrong, it was done well and had decent actors who managed some good scares on our group but it wasn't really impressive. Again keeping with the same theme we found this house to be short and left you with a "hustled" feeling after exiting.

Turning the corner we found ourselves staring at the first decently long line we've seen all night which lead to one of their big 'featured' haunts, "Club Blood".  This haunt being one of their big premier advertising pieces we quickly jumped in line.  The line moved quickly which was a pleasant surprise for it's length, they also had some nice props outside (Coffins, Grave Stones and Blood) peppered all over the area giving you some nice eye candy but they easily could have put some more effort into it rather then just the two areas which props where found.
Inside we found ourselves inside a gothic themed warehouse style nightclub obviously run (or overrun) with vampires.

Now here is when I complain a bit, they where blasting Top 40's music which really wasn't fitting for the slightly ragged/punk look of the inside. For me I'd have expected industrial or something more screechy, having this blasting threw I found to be a huge distraction simply because it didn't fit the theme.  This house was inside and rather warm, we found well dressed actors who did well with startle scares and being up close and in your face.. but little else. Being as this was opening night this was really to be expected, people getting used to the new role and finding their groove. The themeing however was wonderfully done, very much what you would expect from a Gothic club then moving into a darker side of vampires.  However this house too was short and left us with an unfinished feeling upon exiting.

Another jump on a Coaster, This time Grizzly and off to another haunt!

Camp Killauee was looming ahead and so far we where impressed right until we tried to get in line. There where no signs to show folks where to go so we ended up walking up the exit then being sent back. After another minute or two of confusion, someone finally pointed out we where suppose to queue up at the Log Ride. Apparently they never thought to put out signs!

Inside we found your typical horror movie type plot, kids in the camp turned to monster and want to eat you. It's the 80's all over again minus a nutcase in flannel and a hockey mask! In fact, I wish they had the nutcase in a hockey mask we found exactly where they got cheap. Actors in cheap rubber masks, zero extra make-up and simple red and white 'camp uniforms' all shiny and clean (which really, if you where murdered or turned into a monster.. you'd at least get a little dirty)!  This outside house was nicely themed in the proper camp style, we wondered what boyscout troop they divested of tents, the actors appeared slightly awkward and were vastly spread out in the first decent sized haunt we'd come across. The costumes where nothing short appallingly cheap and kept bugging me during our entire tour. One bright point was a lady who followed our group about singing quietly, this was the bright spot and added a minorly creepy factor to an otherwise sad haunt.

The Lair ScareZone

Moving along, it was still drizzling lightly so the crowds where quickly disappearing. We jumped over threw "The Lair" scarezone and into line for our next haunt "No Vacancy" which we found located in next to their Dinosaurs Alive theater (the dinosaurs are another complaint for another post).

This haunt was pretty up front and simple, Haunted Hotel. Another inside haunt, this was easily the best show we've gotten so far tonight. It had everything going well, the actors where excellent in their roles and made had already made them their own. The themeing inside was wonderfully done so far as to even include a false stairway and moving pictures. We're damn near impossible to scare but our group was obviously having fun from the various screams coming from around us. This is the one house so far that we didn't find to be short or leaving us with a hanging feeling, it had an ending! They can do it! Without giving to much away it was a security room, just check the monitors while your passing through..

With time running out, we hauled ass over to another haunt and where happily greeted with something right out of the great book of "What-The-Fuck".. The Doll Factory was next!

Wow, this has "Creepy Shit" written all over it and we loved it! Themed up like an abandoned factory this building and the outside of it had the weird factor turned up to 10. This is also pretty straight forward, an abandoned doll factory taken over and re-opened for a much more twisted purpose.

This house should have been their prime haunt because it was all around amazing. It really had the trifecta of a good haunt: Actors, Themeing, Costuming. They even had actors that would go through the haunt with the groups, heckling them and setting up great scares for the actors located in the different scenes. It was an orgy of broken and headless Barbie dolls and mutilated toys located everyplace! Hanging from the ceiling, the walls, random conveyer belts.. it was so much visual candy to take in even I had some trouble spotting the actors until the screams started. This was easily the best haunt and the actors really had their "A+" game on even for opening night, their costumes where a nice shade of twisted (in pastel no less) and the make-up was eerie. Even people as jaded as my husband and I where happily surprised and very pleased with this house, there was something new around every bend and curve in this maze-like haunt. This was the haunt that really boosted Kings Dominion above a "Meh, Okay" rating and right into the "Good" zone.

With time quickly disappearing we jumped threw yet another ScareZone on our way to the two final stops of the night: Volcano and Avalanche.   This was "PrimEvil" and it was also a step above the other scarezones which after our run threw Doll Factory really boosted our moods into the pleased area.  Cannibals and Corpses impaled on stakes, what more can a girl ask for?! They merged this area into working with two joining pathways and part of a queue line for a Top Spin ride (we call them Flip'N'Fuck's around here).

This place was directly across from Volcano and it fit so perfectly we easily could have lingered here all night if the park wasn't trying to hustle us out at closing time.

Overall I can't say I was really "impressed" with Kings Dominion, I was pleasantly surprised but still left wanting more in the end. It isn't that it was a bad haunt, it just wasn't enough but it easily could have been much more without leaving folks with the feeling of "that was is?!" at the end. While I freely admit to being massively jaded when it comes to haunts and damn near impossible to scare, I found it to be fun even if not impressive or very exciting. I suppose to other folks who do get scared by haunted houses, you'd probably enjoy the creepy job they do very well.

In all honestly, I can't tell you to drop everything and see this haunt. However if your nearby or passing threw the area of Doswell, Virginia on I-95 it's easily worth this low admission and worth the time of stopping for the night.
