Universal Orlando Announces.. an Announcement!

Universal Announces.. an Announcement
Holy Shit on a Shingle, Spiderman!

Universal Orlando's Public Relations is finally breaking the mass seal of silence that's been held over the parks new construction projects.  This comes months after ground-breaking on several of their new constructions which has been mired in rumors and speculation since the masses got a glimpse of equipment being moved in.

The Big Announcement is November 1st, 2012 at 7:30pm EST and be viewed live from their Facebook page.

However, like most things theme park these are pretty much the worst kept secrets ever. Because people like me are nosy as hell, we snoop and listen to the rumors then look at the trends. We all know exactly what is under construction in Orlando even if some of us (read: ME) are in total denial about it and thus refuse to accept it until forced into said submission by an announcement.

Needless to say, Universal botched this 'secret' less then ten minutes after the count-down clock went up. A few industrious folks took a look at the coding and well.. secret blown!

If you DON'T want to know and wish to be surprised, avoid the picture below! I'd also recommend staying away from Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and any other form of social media if you follow theme park folks because we're all talking about it right now!

Smooth Universal, Smooth!

But thanks for telling us so quickly!

Roadside America- Lake Compounce

Good Morning!
We hope everyone had a great and safe weekend, hopefully involving some amusement park fun! We're back to July's feature where we're touring threw America and the local amusement parks that people go outside of the Industry Giants.

Today's Feature is Lake Compounce in Bristol, CT.

Lake Compounce opened in 1846, which gives it the title of America's Oldest Amusement Park! Lake Compounce has a very odd and unique history, when the Norton Family hired a scientist to do some explosive work. Well while the experiment failed, they noticed how many folks showed up to watch the explosions and then the idea happened. A path was put up and public swimming was allowed, with that Lake Compounce was born.

In 1911 Lake Compounce got their first 'attraction' a custom built carousel, then the building really began. in 1914 the first coaster was built "Green Dragon" has a short life and was torn down in 1926. However it was quickly replaced with "Wildcat" which still operates to this day, a classic wooden coaster. After that the park continued to prosper even threw the hardships of the Great Depression, they kept building up and working into the picturesque park it is today.

Today Lake Compounce is owned by Parques Reunidos, which also owns Kennywood and other local amusement parks across the US.

Roadside America- Hershey Park

Today we're looking at Hershey Park, which I'm told is in fact a local park! I was surprised to hear this, being fairly sure most folks would have heard of the worlds sweetest amusement park!

Hershey Park is located in Hershey, PA. Which is about 15 miles from Harrisburg, PA and about 100 miles from Philadelphia, PA.

We've all heard of Hershey's Chocolate and if you haven't, you've got my pity! Needless to say the chocolate from the park is fresh and so very much more tasty!  Hershey Park was owned by Chocolate Mogul, Milton Hershey and began live in 1905 when it was purchased as a pleasure area for the Hershey factory employees. It also boasts several amazing, world class roller coasters. It all began in 1923 with the Wildcat, in the 1970's Hershey Park really got into the Amusement Park game by adding the very first looping roller coaster in the east coast!
Over the years, Hershey has upped it's game into what many consider to be a hidden world class amusement park. Plenty of classic wodden coasters mingle alongside of some of the newest coaster technology.

On a personal note: If you go to Hershey, down in the valley behind Sidewinder you've find some of the best Barbeque EVER in a theme park! Plus their prices are decent and you'll have enough fuel for hours of amusement park fun!

They also have Chocolate World, which is a huge retail outlet for all the products Hershey makes. It also boasts an adorable flat-ride that gives you a good idea of how chocolate is made and always comes with a sample of Hershey's newest treat! Chocolate World is completely free for anyone to visit and browse, which is a nice added bonus if your just passing threw!

Seaworld Adventure Park Orlando- New "Antarctica" Video

It looks like Seaworld is ramping up the hype for the new "Antarctica- Empire of the Penguin" attraction which is taking over the former space of Penguin Encounter. This Video came online to Youtube just yesterday, while it doesn't give us any new hints about the attraction it does some some more of the Penguins and maybe a few possible hints?

What happened to the Characters in Flight Balloon?

Cause I have to tell you, I was confused as hell when I came home from a lovely weekend out to hear that all of Disney's "Characters in Flight" balloons around the world had been shut down.. some even removed very quickly.  I had to contact a friend to even find out what on earth they where talking about because somehow my brain-in-vacation-mode didn't connect the dots!

Well naturally when I got home and sat down for some serious internet searching to try and find an answer! After a little while I came across what many are suspecting is the reason, so I'm here to share it with the rest of you!

Five people where injured when the same type of balloon which operates as Disney's "Characters in Flight" sprung a leak and suddenly became very close friends with gravity.

"The problem was a rupture

in the gas-filled bag. Park officials refused to provide details, but some witnesses said the gash was more than three meters wide.

Well Folks, I think after that article and some really shocking pictures it's easy to see that Disney would quickly bring down their own fleet. However I'm surprised to find out the balloon at Downtown Disney is Orlando, Florida has been completely removed. Perhaps it's simply for a detailed check of all operating items and the balloon its-self but I suspect this could be a permanent closure and full removal for this pay-per-ride attraction.  The balloons in Disneyland and Disneyland Paris are also closed until further notice, no word of their complete removal has been posted yet to my knowledge.

I'll post more information if any becomes available, so please stay tuned!

Daily Distractions- 6/21

Daily Distraction 6/21

Good Morning Folks!
Hope everyone out there is having a wonderful week so far, even if it has been a hot one by most peoples standards! I don't think I count, considering 94 to me is pretty tame. That's what happens when you grow up in Florida!

Anyway, lets get on to today's Distraction!
Keeping with the theme, we're looking at my favorite places to waste time online. What would a theme park maven be if she didn't use one of the best online resources out there? I'm talking about none other then the Roller Coaster Dateabase! Without it we could look into the past, find out where our favorite rides have moved to or even get really good specs on some of our favorite rides!

Crazy Tuesday- Rumors have gone into overdrive!

Good Evening Folks!
I hope you'll forgive me, I've been on night shift lately so the updates are going to be coming about this time for the next two weeks. Sometimes it's not great when the boss goes on vacation but at  least the pay is good!

Wow! Today has been overloaded with rumors, most of them focusing on Disney World. It seems like rumors always hit on Tuesdays, perhaps I'll have to start a new piece that is "Rumor Tuesday" or something! Anyway, let's get down to the meat of this dish! It seems all the theme parks have rumors following them around right now, this is just a small sampling of what I've found floating about!

Again, please keep in mind these are rumors only right now! They come from various internet sources and until confirmed to the public, will always be rumors!

Disney World:
1. When the Grand Floridan Spa reopens, the spa at Saratoga Springs will be closing for a similar refurb.

2. The "glow ears" from World of Color will be incorporated into MK's nighttime entertainment.

3. Avatar Land WILL make DAK a full-day park and feature a nighttime spectacular.

4. Avatar Land will feature a "flex" restaurant similar to "Be Our Guest" that is quick-service by day, table service by night.

5. Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom will be "locked" on easy mode until September at the earliest. This is due to overcrowding of the portals, not technical issues.

6. The next "articulated character" to be developed is Beast. The "core" characters have articulated heads at Dream Along With Mickey and other stage shows. Baloo and King Louie also have articulated heads on the cruise ships.

7. River Country/Ft. Wilderness DVC has been cancelled.

8. Major changes coming to DHS sooner rather than later. Details are fuzzy but some old blueprints have risen from the ash heap of WDI.

9. Decisions HAVE been made regarding Downtown Disney. I don't know what those decisions are, but I'm told an announcement won't be far off.

Universal Studios Orlando:

Odd things are afoot at Universal Studios Florida this past week, especially where Soundstage 44 is concerned. SS#44 is otherwise known as the former home to the short-lived Hercules / Xena attraction, and Murder She Wrote before that. The closed building has served a number of behind the scenes purposes over the years, but I believe was last used for guests as a haunt for The Director several years ago.
Previously work permits were issued for Halloween Horror Nights in seven locations for this year’s haunts. As in past years, it looks like they were reusing the old locations from the past once again, with the exception of the old Jaws queue house being dropped due to demolition, and the new Parade Building structure was also left off the list. As you can see as posted at HHNRumors.com, added to the list was a work order to include “BLD44 HERC&XENA” for a temporary haunt for HHN 2012.
This week things got weird… as a demolition permit was suddenly issued for Building 44. This was followed by the quick setup of heavy duty construction barrier walls surrounding the building and digging machines have already begun to tear up a few large holes in the ground behind the walls. If that wasn’t enough, there are also rumors claiming that Universal Creative performed some kind of balloon test on the site, floating up the balloons fairly high into the sky extending from the corners of Building 44, which could indicate we could be looking at a 50-75 foot structure being planned for the site.
Of course the internet is in a complete tizzy over this already because something is coming… and whatever it is, it looks to be something not only just approved at the last second, but something they are in a big hurry to fast-track into reality. Perhaps something to act as a stop-gap attraction in the off-years while we wait for the London side of the Potterverse. Along this same line of thought… if they are going to fast-track something there is a good chance it could be a copy of another attraction built or under construction elsewhere. ParkRumors has their own thoughts on some of this as well, along with details about the permits that report that these are attached to Universal Creative and not the park, which also is a good indication that this is for a new attraction.
It wont be the new Sesame ride rumored to be on the way to Singapore since the SeaWorld/ Busch parks have the rights to Sesame in the USA. Most of the attractions in the other Universal parks are already in place in Orlando as well with few exceptions. The site is really too small for a King Kong 3-D 360 style attraction… which has left everyone to wonder if there was a change of heart about bringing Transformers to Orlando after all. The ride has been an enormous hit for both the Singapore and Hollywood parks, which has caused some increased guests demand for it to come to Orlando. I’m not saying it is Transformers yet… but mearly something to keep in mind while we dig a little deeper. Stay tuned while we wait for our spies to report in.

Busch Gardens Tampa:

On May 2nd, SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment, the owners/operators of Busch Gardens Tampa, filed a new trademark application for the name Desert Dive and registered the domain name DesertDive.com. Since the park’s new drop tower planned for 2013 will be going into the Timbuktu section of the park, it would only seem logical that these registrations are for the new attraction.
However, just because the park has trademarked the name doesn’t mean it’s the final name they’ve chosen for the attraction. We saw an excellent example of this back in 2010 when SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment registered the name “Cheetaka“. This was widely believed to be the final name for Busch Garden’s new Cheetah themed roller coaster, but it was changed at the last minute to “Cheetah Hunt“.
Below is a screenshot of the trademark application. What do you think of the name? Do you think it should change, or will this be the name of the 2013 drop tower? Let us know in the comments below, or on our forums!

Sadly, this is a place I never was lucky enough (or even alive) to see. So naturally it fascinates me endlessly, it even had a classic rock'n'roll song written about it. New Attraction- Field Station: Dinosaurs!

Good Morning Folks,

My husband stumbled upon this the other day. Field Station: Dinosaurs is a new attraction in Secaucus NJ. It has a focus upon nearly life-size, animatronic and very realistic looking dinosaurs in an walking adventure attraction for the whole family. It appears you travel a walking travel while learning about Dinosaurs and their Paleo lifestyles.

"The story of the dinosaurs is vividly presented on twenty acres of wild, unpredictable woods, mysterious pathways, and mountain trails. Scientists from the New Jersey State Museum have worked to ensure that the exhibition encompasses the latest theories and discoveries in the fields of paleontology, geology, and environmental studies."

Personally I'd love to see this for myself, perhaps I'll plan a trip up into Northern NJ to check it out. Considering I'm an anthropology major, this sounds right up my alley! Plus like many other folks I never lost my fascination with Dinosaurs.  If anyone has attention one of their tours, please let me know how it is!

Pirates getting a NEW attraction- Sort Of!

Well news broke the other day in the form of a slip, Annual Pass Holders (AP) saw in their digital email that a new "Legend of Jack Sparrow" attraction would be coming to Disney Hollywood Studios Orlando this fall.  This piece wasn't in the physical copy of the news letter and was quickly removed which makes all of us think that someone at Disney made a mistake in publishing this little hint!

Well not to let the sudden hype from the internet community and psychotic fan-girls go to waste. Disney World announced today that "Legend of Jack Sparrow" is infact happening, to replace the "Narnia: Prince Caspian" attraction later this year. Narnia is set to close this September at DHS, it's inside of sound stage 4 right beside Toy Story Mania.
This whole thing is spreading like wildfire and Disney Park Blog went into damage control and simply announced this new attraction yesterday. It hit the internet running...

Now before you go nuts and think "New RIDE" just stop.
Don't even think it, we're not that lucky.

"Legends of Jack Sparrow" isn't a ride and can barely be counted as a show.
Let me explain.
Narnia and it's other previous incarnations is a walk-though attraction. It has limited effects, small screens for veiwing movie scenes and plenty of props/costumes within. Our new Pirates attraction will be along the same exact lines.  While they may try to make this new "Jack Sparrow" theme more interactive and entertaining, it's still just a space-filler in my opinion. However, I shall reserve full judgement until I see it for myself.
Don't expect to see this till Holiday Season 2012. Now that's just a personal guess since Narnia isn't closing until September 2012.

Orlando Sentinel has a quote.
"In this attraction, we'll let you walk in the footsteps of Jack Sparrow. It's not 'the making of,' not 'behind the scenes' … it is really a first-person experience," Imagineer Jason Roberts says in the post.

For more details and the press release, please head over to Disney Parks Blog.
